An allergy is a condition in which your body’s immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances, like dust, mold, and pollen. These substances are called “allergens.” When you come into contact with an allergen, your body responds by releasing a chemical called “histamine,” which leads to those uncomfortable allergy symptoms.

Upper respiratory allergies are characterised by runny nose, itching of the nose or throat, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes.

• Allergic rhinitis
• Indoor/outdoor allergies
• Seasonal or perennial allergies

There are 2 types of upper respiratory allergies:

• Seasonal allergies
• Perennial allergies

If your symptoms occur only at certain times of the year, chances are it’s seasonal allergic rhinitis, or outdoor allergies. Common triggers (substances that cause an allergic response) include tree, grass, and weed pollens or mold.

If your symptoms occur year-round, it’s probably perennial allergic rhinitis, or indoor allergies. Common triggers include animal dander (tiny skin flakes or saliva from animals), indoor mold, and dust mites.
