What is Saw Pametto?

Saw Palmetto is obtained from the berries of the saw palmetto dwarf palm tree native to the Southeastern U.S. The berries contain a mixture of fatty acids which exert a favorable effect on the prostate gland. The American Indians used saw palmetto berries as a nutritional tonic for the genitourinary tract.

Saw Palmetto Complex contains the actual liposterolic (oil) extract of the saw palmetto berry standardized to contain 85% to 95% fatty acids and sterols, the level recommended by researchers. This formula also contains extracts of pumpkin seed, which supports prostate function; pygeum, which researchers are interested in for its key ingredients, including pentacyclic triterpenes, sterolic triterpenes, fatty acids, esters of ferulic acid, and beta-sitosterol; and bearberry, which supports urinary passage health.

Testosterone can break down into dihydrotestosterone (DHT.) The DHT can stimulate the prostate cells & contribute to an enlarged prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH.)  Saw palmetto inhibits the enzyme which converts testosterone to DHT, thereby decreasing DHT levels. It inhibits the binding of DHT to its receptor site & blocks the uptake of DHT.  Saw palmetto also exerts a mild anti-inflammatory effect within the prostate.
